CTS Bridges have recently installed a new 151m long cable stay bridge at Lot 7, Ebbw Vale, Swansea.
The bridge is located on the site of the former steelworks and provides a final link as part of the regeneration of the area which has taken place over the last 3-4 years.
The new multi span bridge crosses a railway line, road and river and provides safe access for the local community in the town to schools and leisure facilities across the valley.
CTS’s installation team were on site for 2 weeks in the Spring of 2014 with some atrocious weather to contend with. The spans were lifted into place with various sized cranes including a 500 tonne, 250 tonne, 150 tonne and a 40m Mechanical Work Platform. CTS’s installation team were on site for 2 weeks. The cables connecting the bridges to the tower were tensioned using a Macalloy Techno Tensioner.
The new cable stay bridge comprises of four spans of 47m, 50m, 30m and 25m with a 34m high cable tower supporting the two larger spans with tensioned cables.
Other recent schemes that CTS have been involved with include a new 56m long timber bridge at the new Center Parcs at Woburn Forest which has just opened for business and a 60m x 3.2m three span vierendeel truss bridge at Leicester Technology Park.
As well as steel footbridges, CTS also design and manufacture bridges in timber or FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer). FRP is a
relatively new material for the bridge market in the UK although it is already very popular in Europe. Its main benefits are due to its minimal maintenance and ease of assembly on site saving the customer from long term maintenance costs.
