STEADMANS PROVIDES ROOF AND WALL MATERIALS FOR DISTILLERY IN REMOTE CORNER OF BRITAIN

Leading building products manufacturer Steadmans is raising a dram after supplying materials for maturation warehouses at a new malt whisky distillery on the Isle of Harris.

The company, a principal UK provider for steel construction in the agricultural, industrial and commercial sectors, provided products for the roof and walls of the buildings on the edge of Loch Bunabhainneada. These will be used by Isle of Harris Distillers, after it begins operations this summer.

Steadmans provided over 1,700 linear metres of its 40mm thick AS35 composite panels, in juniper green, for the warehouses. This consisted of almost 980 linear metres for the roofs and over 740 linear metres for the walls. The company also supplied 750 linear metres of Zed purlins, over 500 linear metres of C sections, more than 50 linear metres of eaves beams and 500 linear metres of flashings, plus fixings and accessories.

The materials were installed by 3b construction which provides a fully integrated, in-house service for building, civil engineering, structural steel and agricultural projects throughout Scotland and supplies steel frame buildings throughout the UK.

Iain Barr, a director of 3b construction, said: “We’ve used Steadmans materials for several years and have invariably found the company’s products robust and reliable, its staff well-informed and friendly, and its overall service excellent. We therefore didn’t hesitate to specify the company’s products for this exciting job with Isle of Harris Distillers and I am certain we will order from them in the future too.”

The Isle of Harris is one of Britain’s most remote places, standing at the north-west corner of the Outer Hebrides, 40 miles off the west coast of the Scottish mainland. The nearest land west of the island – noted for its picturesque terrain, spectacular beaches and some of the world’s oldest rocks – is St Kilda and then Newfoundland, in eastern Canada.

Isle of Harris Distillers has raised £12m to finance the construction of its malt whisky distillery in Tarbet, Harris, and the maturation warehouses, with the intention of harnessing the island’s natural assets to create a long term business which provides direct and indirect stimulus to the island’s economy. It employs 10 people, at present, and will start production in early autumn of this year.

In addition to composite wall and roof sheets, Steadmans’ output includes steel cladding, galvanised roofing sections, metal cladding, roofing products and fibre cement sheeting. All its relevant products conform to CE marking regulations and meet their requirements.

The company’s AS35 composite panels consist of two coated steel profiles bonded to a core of PIR insulation, which are used to form roofs, down to a four-degree pitch, and walls. Including a comprehensive range of guttering, flashlights, sealants and roof lights, the AS35 system offers swift completion of a wide variety of weatherproof and high-quality building envelopes, from commercial and warehouse premises to office blocks.

Manufactured in a quality process certified to ISO 9001:2008, using non-ozone depleting technology, AS35 panels are environmentally-responsible, provide excellent thermal performance and have a predicted service life of 40 years. Available in thicknesses ranging from 40mm to 137mm, the panels can be specified to achieve insulation U-values, aiding compliance with the latest L2 regulations, and are Loss Prevention Certification Board approved.

In addition to its headquarters site in Carlisle, Cumbria, Steadmans has facilities in: Uddingston, near Glasgow; Fyvie, Aberdeenshire; and Belfast, Northern Ireland. The company employs 150 people overall and benefits from being part of the SIG UK group.
