FMB warns builders face instant site shutdowns in HSE silica dust crackdown

Builders risk having sites shut down immediately if they fail to comply with a new ban on the dry cutting of engineered stone, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has warned, as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launches a major inspection drive targeting more than 1,000 sites. The HSE has declared dry cutting of engineered stone, including popular quartz worktops, unacceptable due to the dangerous levels of silica dust it releases, which can cause silicosis, an incurable and potentially fatal lung disease.
