McGee Group wins top RoSPA award for use of fleet safety technologyConstruction firm McGee Group has won the Fleet Safety Technology Trophy at the RoSPA Fleet Safety Awards 2019. The London-based firm, which specialises in decontamination, asbestos removal, demolition, piling, civil engineering, construction and recycling services, and is marking its 60th anniversary this year, received its award at a gala dinner at ExCeL London last Tuesday, June 18. Sponsored by Tesco Dotcom, RoSPA’s Fleet Safety Technology Trophy is presented annually in recognition of an organisation’s commitment to using the latest technology to manage occupational road risk – from telematics to e-learning and social media. McGee Group has demonstrated a progressive approach to safety across the mix of vehicles and class types that make up its fleet. Drivers, vehicles and routes are monitored by various technological methods, with data analysed daily. Interventions have been introduced to avoid bridge strikes and to reduce time on the road. There is a strong safety culture and the firm is supportive of innovations and developing young talent, and its safety values are inherent from the top down. John McGee, director, said: “To be selected for the Fleet Safety Technology Trophy for the best performance demonstrated as a Fleet Safety Gold Award winner is fantastic. The award win is a reflection of our continual investment in driver training and using technology to improve safety and performance to deliver a best in class fleet. The award is also testimony to our highly dedicated and passionate workforce who not only maintain current standards, but stop at nothing to keep improving health and safety within our business.” Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of awards, said: “McGee Group makes good use of innovative technology and is at the forefront of design in what is a challenging industry for road safety. It has won numerous awards for its approach and we are delighted to present it with this year’s RoSPA Fleet Safety Technology Trophy.” RoSPA’s other top fleet award – the Fleet Safety Trophy, which recognises the most effective and cohesive programme for the management of occupational road risk, supported by historical performance data – was presented to HTS (Property and Environment) Limited. In addition to the competitive trophies in the RoSPA Fleet Safety Awards, safety charity RoSPA also presents non-competitive achievement awards and this year 53 organisations have had their management of fleet safety recognised in this way, with four – Colas Limited, NFT Distribution Operations Ltd (Bristol), NFT Distribution Operations Ltd (Crick), and Osborne – being presented with the President’s Award for winning more than 10 consecutive Golds. The RoSPA Fleet Safety Awards form part of the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards, which is the country’s most prestigious, largest and longest-running awards programme of its type, attracting nearly 2,000 entrants each year, and is sponsored by NEBOSH. As well as this week’s London ceremony, there was a ceremony in Birmingham earlier in the month and another will take place in Glasgow in September. |
