Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) is pleased to have secured the opportunity to work with MHL Consulting Engineers, providing bridge design support to MHL, who is carrying out the Preliminary Design and Part 8 Planning documentation for the Lehenaghmore Road Improvement Scheme, on behalf of Cork City Council.
There has been a major increase in the population in Lehenaghmore and Lehenaghbeg in recent years, and the necessary infrastructure to support this needs to be provided. Cork City Council has commenced the statutory ‘Part 8’ planning process for the Road Improvement Scheme for Lehenaghmore and Lehenaghbeg. It has taken some time to reach this point and many residents are keenly awaiting these vital road improvements.
Wide footpaths will be provided, as well as a 4m wide pedestrian and cycle bridge on the eastern side of the old Bandon masonry arch Railway Bridge, at a constrained location. A separate structure is required to carry a combined cycle and pedestrian path over the rail cutting and the new bridge will run parallel to the existing stone bridge without impacting it in any way.
GDG was engaged by MHL to carry out an Options Report and Preliminary Design for the bridge. A number of outcomes were considered to determine the preferred solution, including aesthetics, cost, safety, and buildability.
The preferred option is a simple and elegant steel beam bridge. The Part 8 Planning submission is now available to view on Cork City Council’s consultation portal: https://consult.corkcity.ie/en/consultation/lehenaghmore-road-improvement-scheme. GDG is delighted to be supporting MHL on this important scheme for Cork City Council and is looking forward to advancing the final selection to preliminary design.
