GTb recognised for a Considerate Constructors scheme for its work at Otterbourne

GTb, a joint venture between Galliford Try Environment and Binnies UK Ltd, is delighted to report an increase in their scoring in the recent audit carried out as part of the Considerate Constructors scheme.  The Considerate Constructors Scheme is a not-for-profit, independently managed organisation that supports and guides positive change in the construction industry.

All Scheme-registered activities are visited periodically by a monitor who assesses their conformance with the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice, and provides them with helpful guidance to deliver continuing improvement. To achieve the CCS accreditation and to be able to display this on site, your project is audited focusing on three categories: Respect for the Community, Caring for the Environment and Valuing the Workforce. Each focus area is scored out of 15, with a maximum 45 points available. The Otterbourne site scored an impressive 40 out of 45, which was an increase from the last time the site was monitored.

Project teams are required to consider numerous issues and to evidence there are plans in place to reduce risks on site.  Things to consider include noise, lighting and vibration from site activities, security, rubbish, recycling points and involvement in charitable projects, as well as working with local schools on STEM and ISO accreditation.

Patrick Leonard, GTb Project Manager, said: “We are delighted to have scored a respectable 40/45 in the recent CCS audit. The aspects measured by the CCS audit are activities that have become more of the norm over the last decade. At Otterbourne, although we are away from the main town, the Itchen Way, a popular riverside walk, passes right by our site and we have had to divert this when laying new pipes and electric cables. We consulted with the local Parish council in advance of this work, and the diversion has taken place without any complaints.”

“On the environmental side, we have minimised the removal of trees and hedgerows. Where vegetation has been removed, we will create a habitat for insects using the material cut down.”

“With it being a relatively large and lengthy project, some of the workforce have been on site for almost a year. We have a QR code safety observation system which is accessible by all staff. All observations raised are addressed and we have a ‘You said, We did’ notice board of the on-site improvements implemented.”
