The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stuart Norman CEng FICE as its new Chair, marking the start of a new chapter focused on strengthening industry collaboration, improving safety and reinforcing the value of specialist contractors across the construction sector.
With nearly three decades of experience in the piling and foundations industry, Stuart brings a wealth of technical, operational and leadership expertise to the role. A civil engineering graduate from the University of Leeds, his career has spanned a wide range of projects in the UK and internationally, including high-profile schemes such as the Amsterdam Noord-Zuidlijn, the Silvertown Tunnel and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Throughout his career, Stuart has built a reputation for delivering technically robust, risk-aware solutions, alongside fostering high-performing, collaborative teams. His appointment reflects both his standing within the sector and the confidence of his peers.

Speaking on his appointment, Stuart Norman said: “I’m proud to take on the role of FPS Chair. This is an industry that has given me a great deal over the years, and I see this as an opportunity to give something back. We have a strong foundation to build from, but there is more we can do to clearly articulate the value we bring, both to our members and to the wider construction industry.”
A key priority during Stuart’s tenure will be to review and strengthen the Federation’s messaging and visibility, ensuring that the FPS continues to demonstrate the expertise and value delivered by its members.
Stuart added: “We need to move the conversation beyond cost alone and better showcase the technical excellence, innovation and risk management that our members provide. Early engagement is critical, and we must work to ensure that specialist contractors have a seat at the table from the outset of project development.
“The FPS is already in a strong position, but I’d like to leave it even more collaborative, more visible, and with a clearer understanding, both internally and externally, of the value we bring. If we can achieve that, we will be well placed to support our members and the wider industry in the years ahead.”

About the FPS:
Established in 1964, the Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) has proactively worked with its members to drive up standards within the industry. From a handful of members back in the days when rotary techniques were coming into use and crane-mounted and hydraulic equipment was in its infancy, the FPS represents most of the leading piling and geotechnical specialists in the construction sector.
Its independent auditing process, which all prospective members need to go through, ensures the highest standards are met, and this audit is repeated every three years to ensure standards are maintained and continually improved.
The FPS works closely with its members to establish standards and provide guidance across all piling and geotechnical areas as well as on wider construction related issues that affect the sector such as Building Information Modelling (BIM). Safety and training are the highest priorities.
