W

hen thinking about making a building more thermally efficient, the first thing to consider is the performance of the building envelope. If we ensure that the walls, roof and floor are insulated properly, the whole building will act as a closed box, preventing the intrusion of hot or cold air. This means the heating or air conditioning can be used to keep ourselves comfortable without incurring massive bills. There are many insulation materials on the market but not all of them are suitable for every part of the building. For the floor in particular, where a vital function is to support the loads placed on it during the life of the building, the material’s compressive strength and its water absorption characteristics are the most important. With some types of building, loadings are easy to predict and unlikely to increase with time. However, some others, especially industrial buildings, can see the required floor strength increase due to a change of occupancy or developments in production. Any material will compress when a load is placed on it. Therefore, when selecting insulation we need to take into account compression of the floor and whether it is caused by static point loads (such as a rack of shelves in a warehouse) or dynamic loads (such as a forklift or truck entering the warehouse). E x t r ude d Pol y s t y rene ( X P S ) insulation boards can offer excellent compressive strength with products available to cater for a wide variety of load types. Due to the board’s closed-cell structure, they also offer excellent thermal performance compared to open-cell EPS which is vulnerable to frost.

The residential market will typically require boards capable of sustaining loads of up to 200 kPa. Equipped with a butt edge finish, these can be installed below the slab or below the floor screed, as well as in beam and block floors. 300 kPa boards are probably the most versatile, suitable for most residential and commercial buildings. Because they are suited for many applications, manufacturers of fer 300 kPa boards in a range of thicknesses to meet desired performance. For example, Ravago Building Solutions offers Ravatherm XPS X 300 SB in thicknesses from 30mm to 125mm, with a BRE Green Guide rating of A. When constructing a car park deck or cold store it is necessary to consider produc ts with a compressive strength of 500 kPa and the ability to manage dynamic loads caused by constantly flowing traffic. The selection of boards with a shiplap edge finish means they will have an overlap and minimise any gaps. Exceptionally heavy loads like those caused by large aircraft in hangars will require a heavy-duty product. A board with compressive strength of 700 kPa and dynamic load strength of 250 kPa, like Ravatherm XPS X 700 SL, can withstand as much as 25 To/ m2 of continuous load with just 2% of thickness reduction in 50 years.

U-value calculations in floors When it comes to the U-value calculation for a floor, the most important measure to consider is the P/A ratio. This is an expression of the floor size and shape, where the P stands for the exposed perimeter and the A for the floor area of the heated spaces. Most of the heat

loss from a floor occurs around the perimeter and on large floors with low P/A ratio, only perimeter insulation may be necessary to achieve the desired U-value. Other aspects which will affect the U-value calculation are the ground conditions, e.g. clay, sand/ silt and rock, as these have a different thermal resistance. The wall thickness will affect the U-value calculation as well. Certificates from the British Board of Agrément (BBA) assure end-users of performance on the condition that correct installation procedures are followed. Purchasers of products with a BBA certificate, like Ravatherm XPS X 300 SB, can have confidence in their specification and that the performance models will be realised. RELOAD - THE RE-USABLE SILICONE CARTRIDGE BEING GREEN AND SAVING MONEY! A key issue in building conditions nowadays is the issue of site waste. Not only does it impact heavily on the environment which is reflected in your credentials, the shear costs associated with waste disposal is phenomenol. Site Waste Management Plans are becoming statutory practice for building projects over £300,000, recording the types of waste and the volume of waste generated per job which you as construction workers will be responsible for. The need for Site Waste Control is becoming more important because: LANDFILL AVAILABILITY IS GETTING LOW: Over the next decade landfill sites will become scarce due to over filling. Stella Rooflights Breathe New Life into Historic Railway Pumping Station Shore Road Pumping Station is a Grade 2 Listed building in Birkenhead on the Wirral peninsular, Merseyside. The three-storey Italianate style building was designed by engineers James Brunless and Charles Douglas Fox and constructed in conjunction with the Mersey Railway in order to house steam pumping engines, which drew water from the rail tunnels.

he building housed two ‘Grasshopper’ Beam Engines (manufactured by Andrew Barclay of Kilmarnock), which powered pumps designed to remove water from the railway tunnel under the River Mersey. These steam driven pumps have today been replaced by modern electric versions, however one of the original pumps, the ‘Giant Grasshopper’, remains in the building, although it is no longer operational.

Up until 2014 the building served as a public museum, however today the building is closed to the public and maintained and operated by Network Rail.

Network Rail is currently undertaking an extensive package of works to the Shore Road Pumping Station building to secure the building’s fabric in a historically appropriate and sensitive manner. As such, a programme of works were recently authorised for the refurbishment of the building, consisting of the replacement/repair of various elements of damaged fabric.

The property is primarily constructed from red brick and comprises six bays of blind arcading with engaged brick columns and round headed arches subdivided by brick buttresses to the longitudinal elevations and three bays to the gables elevations. Each elevation is supplemented by small round arched single glazed metal framed windows, decorative brick dentils / articulation and stone hood moulds / string courses. To the south-west gable end of the main building is a single storey duo pitched roof outshoot of similar style.

The roof structure is of hipped construction covered with Welsh slate and clay ridge tiles, supplemented by ornamental finials at each apex. The internal roof structure is of timber queen post construction (a truss in which two posts are placed on a tie beam to support the principle rafters above, with the vertical posts held in

As a major part of the refurbishment and preservation work, contractors MFG Construction appointed Stella Rooflight to design and manufacture the Conservation rooflights to replace the original skylights sited in the principle roof slopes of the buildings’ Welsh slate roof. MGL commissioned Stella to produce four bespoke rooflights, of two sizes, the first two with a size of 15,260mm (w) x 1310mm (h) and the second pair at 2842mm (w) x 1304mm (h). Stella divided the large rooflight into five frames to ensure that framework was kept to a minimum and the amount of glazing

Each section consisted of five glazing bars and six glass units giving a total of 30 panes for each rooflight. The smaller rooflights were produced as single frames with a total of six glass units. Each pair of rooflights were linked together with a 316 stainless capping, giving the impression of two large individual rooflights, sitting adjacent to each other in the roof structure. Due to the height of the building and the inaccessibility of the rooflights, regular cleaning was not going to be straightforward, therefore carbon or mild steel frames

were not an option due to the problems that can occur with rusting if they are not regularly maintained. As all Stella rooflights are manufactured using a Marine Grade 316 stainless steel frame and finished with a C5 marine powder coating, they were the ideal choice for the project. Furthermore, the flush fit offered by the thin lines of steel and genuine glazing bars on each unit, would perfectly replicate the original Victorian design and satisfy the Planning and Conservation officers involved. As the rooflights needed to be individually designed to exactly match the size of the originals, a set of complex, detailed drawings were created by Stella, each showing the full assembly of the linked frames as well as files for each individual component, based on the precise measurements provided. Due to the sheer size and weight of each rooflight, one of the major challenges for the MFG team was the positioning and installation of the rooflights, three storeys up in a building situated on a busy main road. To help overcome this challenge Stella allowed for four lifting eyes, which were welded to each individual frame during the manufacturing process, allowing the contractor to lift the frames into position with a crane. The entire design and manufacture process took a total of 8 weeks, despite facing the unprecedented challenges that the early stages of the Covid-19 crisis posed. Having the entire supplier, manufacturing and assembly process based in the UK, enabled Stella to overcome these challenges and ensure that the remaining refurbishment works were unaffected by any delay.

he Titon FireSafe® Air Brick boasts a polyester powder coating, adhering to EN13501-1 classification A2s1, d0 (reaction to fire), while its 1.2mm electrogalvanized sheet steel construction achieves the highest level

of fire classification (A1 – “no contribution to fire”). This ensures each Air Brick is non-combustible, as set out in Approved Document B (fire safety) Volume 1: Dwellings, 2019 edition. In addition to being salt spray tested to BS EN ISO 9227:2012 for corrosion resistance, the Air Brick has also been performance tested to BS EN13141-2:2010 (ventilation for buildings).

For added versatility, there are optional sizes; single brick sizes (204mm x 60mm), single brick and half (330mm x 60mm) and a double brick (204mm x 128mm), which can be connected to 204mm x 60mm and 220mm x 90mm regular, thermal and rigid ducting. Anti-Coronavirus social distancing tech becomes more accessible for SMEs Social distancing in the workplace to meet Coronavirus guidelines has become easier than ever before for employees of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) with the news that Reactec is to make its SAFE-DISTANCE system available to all employers at the same price – regardless of the number of systems purchased.

What’s the Real Cost of Pressure Vessel Repair?

W

hether you’re looking at a multiple tube repair or furnace section replacement (the infamous D Patch Repair), the costs associated with pressure vessel repair can quickly and easily begin to spiral. The actual cost of a repair can run into tens of thousands, with certified materials, coded welders, insurer-appointed NDT inspectors and, in the case of D patch repairs to conventional 3-pass boilers, refractory replacement. The time taken to carry out repairs may also mean a hire boiler is needed to maintain delivery of steam to the site and/ or process. Another cost that can run into thousands of pounds.

Let’s also not forget about the potential financial, environmental and health & safety impacts of an acid clean. Here, specialist teams using often-expensive solventor alkaline-based treatments are required, which means the solutions used must then be

stored or neutralised and disposed of in a safe manner that can also be potentially expensive. Additionally, there’s the financial impact from the boiler/process downtime, which can lead to the loss of services or product. In fact, in many cases the cost of repair is insignificant compared to the cost of several days without steam while a repair is carried out or a replacement hire boiler is delivered, installed and commissioned. So, if you’re specifying steam raising plant for a new project or even replacing ageing steam boilers, don’t just consider the initial capital costs but look at the bigger picture, such as the design of a steam boiler and the potential risks from boiler/process downtime. Unlike conventional vertical and horizontal shell and tube steam boilers – containing long steel tubes through which hot gasses from a furnace pass and around which the water to be converted to steam circulates – the design of Fulton’s radical VSRT utilises a floating, self-compensating heat exchanger design that eliminates the risk of thermal shock. Factor in no tubes (so a minimum 9.6mm material thickness) and NO refractory and the probability of a costly repair is greatly reduced. The VSRT is also backed by an industry-defining, 10-year pressure vessel warranty. So, perhaps the question you should really ask isn’t what the cost of steam pressure vessel repair is, but what is the value of your peace of mind?

The future of health and safety training for the construction industry We’ve sat down for a Q&A with SAMS Limited Operations and training Director Lee Sadd to see how his health and safety training company have dealt with educating people and companies on a variety of courses. Q: Hi Lee, Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Our first question is how are things going for SAMS since we’ve come out of lockdown and people have gone back to work. A: It was a very difficult period from March to May when we were at the height of lockdown. I had to make the decision to furlough all of my employees like many other businesses. Since then we have adapted our training outlay and opposed to clients coming into our offices we’ve taken quick and decisive action to go online for 7 of our most prominent courses which in include CITB, IOSH and NEBOSH training. Luckily after May and the introduction of online training we have had a positive upturn in business. Q: What lead you to moving the course online as we know previously CITB was only a faceto-face option? A: The great news for us was that CITB made the decision to move their courses online, which was crucial to SAMS. I think this was a major step in

the right direction and massively helped us to sustain custom over lockdown. With our clients a majority of them are in the construction industry and continued to work even when other sectors were on hold. So the training requirement was still there and we actually saw an increase after May as sadly many people who’s jobs had been lost due to the pandemic moved into our industry, as it was still vibrant. Another successful course, which we are proud to offer, is our mental health first aid training. With the current situation it has left a lot of people needing assistance so we were so pleased to help guide companies and people through this. Q: How do your clients find the online training? A: They love it! It’s great for them as they can learn from us in the comfort of their own homes. I’ve noticed that people are more willing to speak up through the course online as opposed to in person. It also really helps the UK as no travel is required. What’s been great for us is we can now train people all over Great Britain. We’ve had clients from as far as Scotland attend our courses.

I do miss the face-to-face interaction but over the last few months we have successfully made a safe and covid secure workspace, which will mean from October 1st we can welcome people back to our HQ in Manston. Q: Do you think Zoom training for this sector is here to stay? A: In short, I don’t know. I think the CITB have been fantastic in how they have allowed the training to be completed remotely so that students can earn the qualifications required to carry out their role. The feedback we have from people has been brilliant and that cannot be ignored. However at the same time if awarding bodies decide faceto-face is the best way to be educated they will revert. In my personal opinion I think it will stay as the last 6 months have show that it works. From a business perspective we find the online course very fruitful as we have a much larger reach of people that we can train. We’re looking forward to January 2021 as we resume our classroom NEBOSH training that is a great course for aspiring safety professionals. Introduction The supply & use of hot water is vital to the efficient function of almost all industries. From NHS Healthcare to Care Homes to food production, hot water is critical yet often an overlooked integral part of the system design is the overall ability to accurately control hot water temperature. This capability can allow you to preemptively tackle or avoid issues arising from poor hygiene regimes or bacteria. The significance of hot water temperature

control itself is being given a lot more attention, as seen in a CIBSE journal article entitled “Taking the temperature – domestic hot water” which looked at the potential of reducing carbon and providing modern, safer low energy solutions simply by focusing more on temperature and revising guidance (CIBSE, 2020). The importance of being able to accurately control hot water temperature will be explored in this paper.

How is precise temperature control achieved? Temperature control is the procedure where the change of temperature of a space or substance is measured and the movement of heat energy into or out of said space or substance is adjusted to achieve a desired set temperature. In the case of hot water heaters, this process is governed by a temperature controller. This instrument simply calculates the difference between a set-point and a measured temperature by taking an input from a sensor and giving an output signal for the connected heat element. Venturing into system design, another way to ensure the desired temperature is provided at the outlet is by using thermostatic mixing valves (TMV’s). A TMV uses an internal thermostat that blends hot and cold water to achieve this result.

Table 1 opposite shows a comparative analysis between a continuous flow and storage water heater. As you can see from the data, the storage tank option tends to be less efficient and consume more energy. Once you factor in replacement costs, a continuous flow hot water heater is the more cost and energy efficient option as well as being better at reducing the carbon footprint. However the most important feature with regards to temperature control and what makes continuous flow the preferred option for this application is the ability of some continuous flow water heater models to constantly provide temperature accurate hot water with a precision of up to ±1°C.

The two main forms of supplying hot water are the conventional storage tank water heater and the continuous flow (instantaneous) water heater. The main differences are outlined below. Storage water heaters: • Have a limited amount store of water. • When store depleted takes time & fuel to reheat before use. • Require greater plant room space. • Materials handling issues, heavy and cumbersome. • Standing losses. Continuous flow heaters: • Hot water is heated and provided solely upon demand. • Evidence and data that they are mechanically and operationally more efficient.

ACOP L8 is the Health and Safety Executive Approved Code of Practise that governs the control of Legionella in water systems. Legionella – full name Legionella pneumophila – is a bacteria that causes, amongst other less serious conditions, Legionnaires disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. Legionella bacteria are common in natural water sources but the conditions are rarely conducive to people catching the disease. This usually occurs in purpose-built water systems and the risk of being exposed to Legionella increases in warm, stagnant water, passed to humans via breathing in miniscule, aerosol-like droplets of water. Specific guidance for the control of L pneumophila in water systems is provided in ACOPL8 and its associated regulations, HSG274 Part 2. When it comes to combating Legionella, precise temperature control is one of the strongest weapons available. The bacteria begins to die in temperatures above 50°C and cannot survive above 60°C Certain conditions support the growth of bacteria, such as a temperature range of 25°C to 45°C as well as the presence of certain deposits such as lime-scale, rust, sludge

and organic matter can also increase this risk. This is why it is important to control the risk of exposure and do all you can to minimise it by introducing measures that restrict the growth of bacteria and reduce exposure. Traditionally this is done via temperature control, keeping stored water at least at 60°C and ensuring distributed water is supplied with 50°C water (55°C for healthcare) at outlets within 1 minute.

Scalding When discussing temperature control of water the risk of scalding should always be considered, especially in the health and social care sector. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), high temperatures over 44°C can create a scalding risk and as such water temperatures discharged from outlets accessible to those vulnerable or where there is the potential for full body immersion must not exceed this temperature. Engineering controls can be put in place in order to ensure this. These include using the aforementioned thermostatic mixing valves which should be placed as close

to the outlet as possible, temperaturerestricted or temperature accurate instantaneous water heaters. This would allow water of a safe temperature to be provided continuously and reliably at the outlet. For example there could be a scenario where a water heater was set using the controller to provide water of 43°C directly to the outlets. In this case, the use of thermostatic mixing valves would not be required though there could be legionella concerns. However regimes could be put in place to help control this. One method that could be used in addition to normal operation is a pasteurization regime. This would consist of raising the water temperature very high to over 70°C, the point at which legionella bacteria are killed instantly, and flushing the system. This could be done when the building in question is not occupied, the water is returned to a safe temperature prior to occupancy and it could potentially allow for water to be supplied as low as 43°C during regular use, reducing consumption immensely.

The temperature of hot water is critical for many hygiene regimes across a variety of industries such as laundry for hotels, care homes and healthcare, particularly with regards to the cleaning and disinfectant processes. Being able to reliably provide water at these temperatures not only serves to properly disinfect the items in question every time but gives the end-user peace of mind. According to the Health & Safety Executive’s HSG (95)18 Hospital Laundry Arrangements for Used and Infected Linens, “The washing process should have a disinfection cycle in which the temperature in the load is maintained at 65°C (150°F) for not less than 10 minutes or, preferably, at 71°C (160°F) for not less than 3 minutes”. This is especially important as there are a number of harmful bacteria that can survive temperatures of over 50°C degrees such as Staphylococcus aureus, a well-known pathogen that if allowed to invade the skin deeply can cause a plethora of diseases, ranging from superficial skin infections that cause boils to more systematic issues like pneumonia and blood infections. Maintaining high temperatures ensures that such bacteria are killed before they have a chance to become a problem.

The need of hot, potable water is essential in any food processing operation as it is a major component of the cleaning process. To reduce the risk from hazards, comply with legislation, presenting a hygienic visual image or to ensure the variety of bacteria and residue left behind during production is removed, having clean equipment is of paramount importance. Hot water (thermal energy) plays an integral role in the effectiveness and rate of the cleaning method. Increasing the temperature generally increases the rate of the chemical reactions involved in the cleaning and so make it more effective and take less time. In the same vein, higher temperature of water may require the use of less detergent, allowing money to be saved. The goal is often to find the perfect balance between cost, efficacy and food safety and so the ability to precisely provide water of specific temperatures is hugely beneficial and allows great control.

Conclusion It is clear to see that implementing temperature precision and control in the specification and installation of hot water systems is vital and will only continue to grow in importance, particularly in the current pandemic and the aftermath. Being able to choose between providing water hot enough to combat Legionella and disinfect laundry or low enough to prevent scalding is a useful tool and if it is more widely incorporated as one of the first steps in the design process, a plethora of issues can be avoided and effectively design-engineered out of the equation.

MariMatic to deliver Automatic Waste Collection to the City of Amsterdam MariMatic has, through a public tender process, been chosen by the city of Amsterdam as the supplier of an Automatic Waste Collection System (AWCS) for the new residential area in Sluisbuurt. The system utilizes MariMatic’s unique energy efficient MetroTaifun® technology with noncorrosive pipe networks. Sluisbuurt is a new neighborhood in Amsterdam located on the Zeeburgereiland and it will comprise of 5500 new homes and include schools, shops and offices. In addition to the OAT system (Dutch acronym for automatic waste collection system AWCS), the area will be equipped with other kind of sustainable technologies, such as district heating from renewable energy. Waste is collected and transported directly from the buildings through an underground pipe network by using vacuum conveying to a waste transfer terminal, eliminating noisy and polluting traditional waste trucks from the area. Four different waste fractions are collected to separate containers located in the waste transfer terminal. The containers will then later on be picked up for further distribution to recycling centers etc. The waste transfer terminal, which is part of the scope of the contract, called “The Diamond”, will be located in the park. The building is designed with high sustainability in mind, including solar panels, rainwater collection and even a charging point for the service cars. Part of the walls will be glass, giving the public possibility to view the pneumatic collection in action. The public tender in Amsterdam was focused on technology, reliability, performance, quality,

and a technical life cycle of 60 years. MariMatic’s technology and solutions achieved maximum scores. MariMatic is known for the usage of 300 mm diameter “composite piping”, instead of the commonly used 500 mm carbon steel piping systems. Due to absence of corrosion, longer life cycle of the systems is achieved. Interruptions of possible blockages are minimized, as the waste easier fills up the pipe, giving higher vacuum force for conveying. Development of MariMatic’s formator technology enable use of larger waste bags (150 liter) in 300 mm size piping. MariMatic’s patented Ring-Line configuration allows change of air flow direction, to facilitate removal of possible blockages. Recently, MariMatic was also awarded contracts to supply Automatic Waste Collection Systems for the two new residential areas in Sweden, Förseglet, Västerås and Haga Norra, Stockholm.
