N

ot only is this self-fusing silicone repair tape an incredible solution to stopping leaks but it also has infinite uses in and outside the home that you may never have thought about. Silicone Rescue Tape can be used for 1,000’s of applications. From emergency repairs to electrical wiring to waterproofing and even medical situations, it is truly an amazing product with a variety of uses. A quick description: Rescue Tape is silicone and sticks to itself — well, actually, it fuses to itself — when wrapped around an object. The tighter you pull it, the better the seal. It’s great on hoses and plumbing and unlike electrical tape, it won’t get gummy, and it won’t dry out like duct tape can — even in the sun. Rescue Tape is a waterproof repair tape which seals live leaks on pipes made from copper, PVC plastic, steel, malleable iron, and many other materials. Ideal for fixing leaks in applications ranging from small domestic plumbing problems through to large scale industrial pipe repairs, it avoids costly and disruptive shutdowns of systems. The versatility of the product makes it suitable for wrapping car exhausts, hoses and other types of pipes, and can also be used as an electrical tape with insulation protection up to 8000 volts. It is easy to use and depending on the size and pressure of the pipe, repairs can be carried out in under 15 minutes. The tape stretches by three times its length and once applied, it fuses to form a solid rubber band which exerts maximum pressure over the hole or crack in the pipe. Using multiple tapes creates a repair which is pressure resistant up to 8 bar and is temperature resistant up to 260°C. You wrap it around an item, and overlap it by 50%, pulling tight — stretching it to at least double the length — and going 3 to 5 inches on both sides of the leak (not necessary for things like rigging, chain marking, line whipping and so on where there’s no leak). That means for a 1″ split in a hose, the total repair is going to be 7 to 11 inches long! The tighter it’s wrapped, the faster and stronger it will fuse. For high pressure leaks, you may need to put a second layer on. But the result will be water-, fuel- and air-tight. Consider it permanent, too — if you need to remove it, you’ll have to cut it off.

The fourth emergency service - Rescue Tape We have all been there when we have an emergency leak that requires immediate attention but you can’t get hold of anyone to come out and fix it; this is why having a roll of Bond It Rescue Tape in the house or in your tool box is a huge benefit; Rescue Tape is one of those products that, once you use it, you wonder how you got by without it.

What can Rescue Tape be used for? The tape has no adhesive so there is no sticky residue like regular electrical insulation tape, so you can’t accidentally stick it to things you don’t want it to stick to which also means items can be repositioned easily to get the perfect bond. The uses are only limited by your imagination but here are some great ideas where you can use it:

For emergency first aid - wrap silicone tape around a bleeding injury on fingers, arms or legs.

Wrap silicone tape around electrical connections, wires (especially connections near pools and hot tubs) to seal out moisture.

Wrap silicone tape around cups and glassware to help disabled people grip their drink.

Cover your luggage handle with bright coloured silicone tape for an easy-to-spot and comfortable grip.

Fix a leak on a garden hose, a radiator hose or a vacuum hose.

Wrap on camera grips and tripods, tools, bike handle bars to make a protective non-slip grip that leaves no residue on expensive equipment. Or apply to golf clubs, rackets and bats for better sports grip and less vibration.

Wrap tape on wire or wooden hangers to prevent clothes from slipping off onto the floor.

Use on sailboats as rigging tape for turnbuckles and spreader boot covers or repair bilge, sanitation or fridge hoses.

Cover iron cookware handles for a non-slip grip that prevents you from burning your hands. And many, many more uses!

Tidy up wiring bundles by using silicone tape instead of electrical tape.

Fix leaky PVC or copper pipes on household plumbing or sprinkler systems.

Its not just a plumbers tape, Rescue Tape can be utilised in the automotive, marine, agricultural, landscaping, engineering, electrical and even military sectors. It’s easy to see why Rescue Tape is the World’s most recognized and best-selling brand of self-fusing silicone tape.

Cover foam pipe insulation with silicone tape to make an air tight waterproof protective layer.

Make an emergency silicone gasket or an emergency o-ring or make a temporary repair on a truck air hose.

Plus if you send in pictures of your Rescue Tape applications you have a chance of winning £500 – see our competition details on the website for more information. Tel: 01422 315300 or visit www.bonditgroup.com

Europe Plans, Prepares For a Future Hydrogen In a two part article Rinnai’s Chris Goggin looks at the growth and development of the present European and international hydrogen market. The UK is not alone in its faltering progress towards NetZero. Here he offers detailed information, of direct importance to any consumer either in the commercial or residential markets, about future international and continental energy proposals that will likely affect UK consumer options and costs.

G

ermany has manoeuvred itself, amongst other EU countries, to take a leading role in becoming hydrogen ready, not just for the aim of NetZero but also for the creation of a whole new industry. The German government is vocal of its intention to become the lead nation in all hydrogen concerns. Germany is Europe’s largest economy and ranks as the fourth largest internationally. Germany houses two of the four largest ports on mainland Europe, as well as also holding vital road and rail links with Rotterdam – Europe’s largest port, who incidentally have also announced intentions to incorporate hydrogen into future plans.

04

In addition to a provided “stimulus” financial package that supports the development of hydrogen technologies, the German government intend to deliver a

further 7 billion euros in this field of research, as well as another 2 billion euros aimed at developing international partnerships which focus on advancing hydrogen technology. (Clean Energy Wire, 10th June 2020).

electric costs accumulated in the process of producing green hydrogen. A levy on electrical costs will enable manufacturing of bulk green hydrogen with the long term aim of substantially reducing consumer cost.

As of May 2021, an additional 8 billion euros has been sanctioned to explore 62 large-scale hydrogen projects. A majority of the funding will focus on manufacturing electrolysers, used for green hydrogen production, and creating sufficient infrastructure able to transport pure hydrogen and alternative hydrogen gas blends.

The German NHS (National Hydrogen Strategy) further details the idea that not all renewable and hydrogen facilities can be built on German soil, raising the possibility of neighbouring countries entering a collaborative hydrogen production and distribution effort.

Specifically, the German government intends to construct 1,700 kilometres of new pipeline. This will be sit on the GermanDutch border and run from east to west Germany. The pipeline will provide domestic and commercial energy and can be used to export hydrogen to neighbouring countries. (Euractiv 28th May 2021) In attempting to create hydrogen as a central component in its decarbonisation strategy, Germany aims to nullify all

Germany’s neighbour, The Netherlands, also released its own national hydrogen strategy. The Dutch hydrogen strategy acknowledges that a portion of German hydrogen demand will pass through the Netherlands as imports. Currently 13% of imported German coal and oil is transported directly through the Port of Rotterdam. Once an established decarbonized supply of hydrogen is active, German hydrogen fuel imports are predicted to expand once consumer demand increases.

October 2021

and Invests Economy The Port of Rotterdam is already Western Europe’s leading hub of energy redistribution due to its strategic geographical positioning in North West Europe. 8, 800 petajoules of energy is annually imported and exported through Rotterdam oversees. This amounts to almost three times the yearly energy demand of the Netherlands and 13% of the total energy demand in the entire EU. The PoR (Port of Rotterdam) has revealed plans to construct its own hydrogen manufacturing hub capable of facilitating domestic and commercial power. This move towards hydrogen improves emissions and places the PoR at the forefront of a future international hydrogen economy. The Dutch port plans to independently produce both blue and green hydrogen. Current stocks of grey hydrogen which contain low levels of toxic properties will be converted into blue carbon neutral hydrogen via a subterranean infrastructure and stored underground ready for utilization. Green hydrogen will be electrically generated off shore through wind power and transported across high voltage cables into storage ready for deployment. Within the Netherlands hydrogen strategy the results from seven energy scenarios conducted by Berenschot, an independent Dutch consultancy firm are included. These results indicate at least 30% rising to 50% of Dutch energy consumption will be supplied via greener gasses by 2050.

As of April 2021 the Netherlands allocated 338 million euros towards green hydrogen projects. This financial assistance is part of a 20 billion euros fund provided by the Dutch government to strengthen its post-Covid economy. The financial package aims to stimulate green hydrogen production and to further diversify hydrogen’s versatility. Distribution of funding will be over 5 years. Modifying infrastructure is an area the Dutch government is keen to accelerate progress. This is seen in the announcement of an additional 3.7 billion euros meant for infrastructural spending and a number of research projects. (Reuters April, 2021.) Accumulation of positive data, release of funds, and German interest has encouraged the Netherlands government to commit towards hydrogen in becoming a sustainable and affordable national fuel source. In the current political and financial climate Germany is the lead European nation whilst the Netherlands maintains Europe’s largest and most active port. Each country is adapting infrastructure, constructing distribution hubs and introducing incentivised legislation favouring hydrogen

manufactures; Germany and the Netherlands appear to have embraced hydrogen’s potential. Any significant movement into hydrogen manufacturing by influential European countries and institutions that perform a global role in financial logistics could be regarded as a potential precursor to similar UK governmental announcements. In the next article we will look at how France and Italy are following the trend of huge investment into Hydrogen as a base line fuel for their respective economies. Out with Old Hybrid in with New TRIBRID® CT1 – The UK’s Number 1 Sealant and Adhesive – Unique TRIBRID® Technology

CT1

has been notably considered and voted as the Number 1 Sealant and Adhesive in the UK, and been the market leader for almost 18 years. The first to introduce the term and technology hybrid polymer, turned the industry on its head by introducing a product that replaces several products in just 1 tube. CT1, which replaces all other silicones, sanitary and butyl rubber sealants. CT1 replaces mastic, wood and P.U adhesives. Trades people, all across the UK now only need one tube as opposed to several for a job. But as we know it’s not just why the trade buy CT1. CT1 which boasts over 25 accreditations, guarantees to work first time all the time. Due to its unique formula, CT1 has no solvents and guarantees never to shrink or crack. Never having to revisit a job.

08

Never resting on their laurels, and always the first to introduce latest technology, CT1’s research and development department which never

sleeps, realised that hybrid technology was now dated and the industry wanted more from hybrid polymers. Clear hybrid polymer’s conventionally yellowed over time, a common gripe with tradespeople. Often the white discoloured. Painting over hybrid’s could also be problematic with a pink tinge seeping through. Realising this, CT1 have introduced TRIBRID® This unique formulation has now surpassed the hybrid formulations. CT1 is now 3 times stronger. It has been tested on all building materials and the tests are outstanding. Each test on each substrate, outperformed hybrid’s by 3 times. Tests carried out under BS EN ISO 8339:2005, showed Brick to Copper, 251% stronger than hybrid, Brick to Wood, 357% times stronger than Hybrid. The elongation of TRIBRID® and extension at break has never been seen before in the industry. TRIBRID® outperforming old hybrid technology has over 25 accreditations making CT1 still the most eco compliant and healthiest choice of sealant on the market.

Not only that, but the colour retention of both white and clear outperforms hybrids, the TRIBRID® has colour retention up to 25 years under the correct environments. CT1 recently has been also awarded yet another accreditation SINTEF which adds to CT1’s crown of being the most environmentally friendly sealant on the market. SINTEF is a certification to prove documentation of health and environmental characteristics of construction products related to relevant environmental requirements in the Norwegian Market. CT1 which is made in Britain with British technology and design, guarantees quality and a local technical service, which proves popular for local building authorities and project managers when looking for technical advice on site. Various projects across the UK, national landmarks, attractions and public buildings have been saved, restored and built using CT1. CT1 was the only one specified, the only product capable of performing under certain tough elements and environments. The Wave in Bristol is one such attraction. The Wave is the first inland-surfing destination of its kind, but also a marvel in engineering, creating real waves inland used for both training at Olympic level and tourist attraction. CT1 was the only sealant and adhesive that past all required test’s and the only one capable of performing in such harsh and difficult conditions. Diana’s memorial fountain, The London Eye, The Olympic Village and many more. This is why all leading independents and nationals have full profiles of CT1. Travis Perkins, Wickes, Jewson’s, Toolstation, Buildbase all profile the latest technology. TRIBRID® from CT1. www.ct1.com

Sliding Doors for City and Suburbia by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK There are several design choices when considering the specification of sliding doors for use in a city high rise or in a typical residential setting. Not only are the opening styles important to suit the clients’ needs, but there are also choices which will make the door both look and perform better for longer, if specified correctly.

T

he types of sliding door can be broken down into two basic operational functions, these can be simple inline sliding, or folding sliding. Inline sliding doors consist of large sliding panels which slide within the door reveal to open the room up to the outside. In their most basic form, they are two sliding panels, normally with one fixed and one sliding. Along with the basic sliding doors, there are ‘tilt and slide’ doors and ‘lift and slide’ doors. These doors offer higher weather ratings than the basic sliding door systems. The ‘tilt and slide’ is basically a large open-in sash which is fully sealed with a centre seal and is locked with multiple points around the frame. The hardware allows the panel to open in and then slide to one side behind the fixed panel. The ‘lift and slide’ offers a lift facility with a large handle once operated lifts the sliding panel up very slightly off the bottom seals and then allows the panel to slide with little

14

effort. These systems can be specified with 2, 3 or 4 tracks allowing the door panels to stack behind each other within the door reveal. There is also the option to hide the door panel or panels into a side wall given the space, to offer an almost clear opening. Sliding folding arrangements allow the doors to ‘concertina’ open, offering an almost clear opening. Doors are stacked perpendicular to the track, either on one side or both sides, depending on their design. These doors can either stack internally or externally, again, depending on the design option. Because of their frame design and ease of installation, they are often specified in home improvement applications. Crucial to all large sliding door installations is the need to have a substantial structure to fix to on all sides. Often the head of the opening can cause issues, particularly on a wide door installation. If there is any

settlement of a lintel or structure, this can cause issues with future operability. Live loads should also be considered to ensure that the sliding door does not bind in certain loading conditions. Colour can also become an issue, such as a dark door facing south, so expansion should be allowed for in the construction. Clear guidance should be sought on these issues from the systems company and structural engineer to ensure ease of operation. Given the styles of door available, the choice comes down to visual appearance and practicality. Externally stacking sliding folding doors may not be suitable in a high-rise application due to limited space on a balcony. Sliding doors do offer more clear glazing per opening with much less aluminium visible but may not offer a full opening. With more available outdoor space, sliding folding doors are often chosen for home improvement or new traditional home build or grand designs type projects. Weather performance is crucial, especially in high rise applications. Basic sliding doors often will not meet the exposure requirements of a high rise location but lift and slide doors that rely on their weight once closed to rest weather seals, can offer exceptional weathering capability. Aluprof’s MB-77HS system, for example, offers an impressive maximum Class 4 air tightness when tested to BS EN 12207 and a Class 9A (600Pa) for watertightness when

October 2021 being specified, but consideration over access for cleaning and maintenance also needs to be considered. A very wide range of finishes are available today along with colours realistic woodgrain effect coatings are available and the ability to dual colour with an inside and outside colour option. Whichever is chosen a minimal cleaning regime should be specified so that the finish will offer a lifetime of use. Crucial to correct specification of these sophisticated systems, it is recommended to always contact a specialist when looking to specify sliding systems for either city high rise or typical residential setting. Getting the design choices right at start can save both a great deal of time and cost later down the project timeline. Here at Aluprof UK we have a team of dedicated support technicians just a phone call or email away. tested to BS EN 12208. This door has also been successfully tested to CWCT standards when used within a high rise facade and is possibly the door style most often chosen by specifiers for high rise use. Key for most designers and specifiers on high rise applications is the threshold arrangement which is to be kept as low as possible in order not to create a trip hazard. Basic sliding doors and tilt and slide doors will need some form of step or visible frame at the threshold, but the lift and slide only needs a low, or flush threshold, with a groove for a guided roller, the weather seals being carried in the sliding panel. The choice is with the specifier, but the lift and slide door option offers the best combination of ease of use, best use of space, flush threshold, high weather rating and minimal maintenance requirements. Aluprof provide examples of robust detailing to ensure both weathering and thermal performance Ian each product technical manual. In a traditional residential application sound attenuation may not be an issue, but on high rise, particularly on lower levels, an acoustic glass may be required. It is possible to specify systems which can accept thicker acoustic glazing at lower floors and on upper floors revert to a more traditional double or triple glazed unit. This can often be accommodated in one design of a sliding door system. Sound attenuation may also be

required through any trickle vents so the accommodation of these larger vents will need to be considered when specifying a sliding door system. With the Future Homes consultation suggesting much lower heat transfer (U values) for doors by 2025, a well insulated systems frame design and capability to carry high performance triple glazed units should be considered. The MB-77HS lift and slide system, for example, can offer a very high insulation capability of up to 0.84 W/(m2K). Consideration should also be made for the replacement of glazing and decided if external or internal glazing is to be adopted. All sliding doors are well equipped today with quality locks that meet PAS 24, however for traditional residential applications at ground floor level, possible additional security is required dependent on the location. Remote control options are also becoming more popular on sliding doors where doors can be opened from a remote control or an application on a smart device. As with all user operated devices, at some time in the future, all doors will require some form of maintenance. It is worth considering this regarding the availability of parts so, choosing a systems company of repute, such as Aluprof, would be strongly advised.

Since setting up the Aluprof Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high-performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the company’s headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company is becoming a global player in facade supply.

Further information is available on the company’s website at aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK head office in Altrincham on 0161 941 4005.

Architectural Powder Coatings - The Facts About Fire By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Chairman

T

here has been a great deal of discussion that has taken place of late over the combustibility of the external envelope of some of our high-rise dwellings where aluminium composite panels (ACM) containing flammable cores have been used. These panels are in the process of being removed and replaced to meet stringent new standards. Insurance companies, mortgage providers and other property stakeholders have also had their part to play to mitigate risk and have forced building owners to check for ACM and other issues such as areas of timber decking. All this will ensure a safer building stock for our city’s high-rise dwellings. The surface spread of flame on a high-rise dwelling can cause fire to spread quickly from floor to floor and legislation is now in place to ensure construction designs slow down the spread of a fire through the building envelope, or to stop it altogether, by correctly specifying the materials used in the building project. As a result, new and refurbished buildings deemed to be high-rise, over 18m in England (11m in Scotland), will be considerably safer. Of late members of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland have seen a rising number of powder coating specifications that request an ‘A1’ classification for combustibility under BS EN 13501-1. When traced back through to the specifier, the origin of this requirement largely stems from property stakeholders who are misguidedly attempting to mitigate their risk by exceeding the current guidance, standards and legislation currently available. This can add both complexity and costs to projects without any benefit or reduction of risk.

Anodised Aluminium Sheet - tested to BS 8414 Pre-Coat Aluminium Sheet - tested to BS 8414 PPC Aluminium Sheet - tested to BS 8414

October 2021 When applied at standard industry thicknesses, architectural Polyester Powder Coating (PPC) achieves an ‘A2-s1,d0’ classification. This classification is required for compliance to the amended Building Regulations 2010 (Approved Doc B: Fire Safety) Nov 2018 and accepted as providing the necessary protection from the surface spread of flame on high-rise construction and other legislated buildings. Ultimately, PPC does not promote combustibility or fire spread when tested to BS EN 13501-1. This is further supported by the testing required for London Underground approval, often lauded as a barometer of fire safety. This requires compliance to EN 45545, where spread of flame is measured objectively (ISO 5658-2) unlike BS EN 13501-1 which involves visual assessment only. Furthermore, PPC smoke production is extremely low or non-existent (s1) with no flaming droplets (d0). On the chart of combustibility, ‘A2-s1,d0’ sits just under the ‘A1’ classification. It is important to assess the cladding system holistically and not just the performance of the constituent parts under BS EN 13501-1. The predominant fire test for the whole external cladding system is BS 8414. This provides a route to compliance for buildings over 18m that are outside the scope of Part B regulations. This requires materials to meet the performance criteria given in BRE report BR 135 which measures whether the cladding build up is deemed safe for buildings at elevated height. The test itself involves a 9m high wall with a complete cladding installation, including the fixing of panels and insulation. It is therefore a through-the-wall test. When tested to these stringent fire safety standards, PPC performs as well as anodised and pre-coated aluminium sheet material. The three images for each of the tests show the cladding after the test, then with cladding removed and then with insulation removed to show the membrane.

A blanket specification of ‘A1’ restricts the choices of colour for the facade, also it will no doubt incur increased supply costs and shows a lack understanding of the standards and current best practice. But, irrespective of whether aluminium cladding is ‘A1’ or ‘A2- s1,d0’ classified, the critical aspect is to ensure the full system is specified, configured and installed correctly. This ultimately governs all safe cladding installations. In closing, QUALICOAT UK & Ireland firmly believe that the ‘perceived’ reduction in risk is not necessarily mitigated by moving from ‘A2-s1,d0’ classification to ‘A1’. Members of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland believe education on the subject is required and will be approaching the relevant property stakeholders, such as insurance companies, local councils, developers and building funders. QUALICOAT UK & Ireland will make representation to protect the industry, to ensure specification

freedom and to negate unnecessary surface finish costs. A more detailed guidance note is available on the QUALICOAT UK & Ireland website. The next QUALICOAT UK & Ireland members meeting takes place on 19th October 2021, at the Arden Hotel & Leisure Club, Solihull , please contact the General Secretary, Jan Lukaszewski, via the QUALICOAT UK & Ireland website, should you wish to attend. MECALAC LAUNCHES MR50 AND MR60 TILTROTATORS

M

ecalac, a global leader in the design and manufacture of compact construction equipment, has announced the launch of its MR50 and MR60 Tiltrotators and dedicated grading buckets. Available for Mecalac crawler excavators and wheeled excavators fitted with the CONNECT hydraulic quick coupler, the new MR50 and MR60 Tiltrotators offer even more possibilities.

Mecalac Tiltrotators: a cut above This integrated Mecalac solution consists of a Tiltrotator between two CONNECT quick couplers, fitted directly at the factor y, alongside a specially designed grading bucket. The Mecalac MR50 and MR60 Tiltrotators allow for a 360° rotation in both directions, as well as a 40° tilt left and right for various attachments, including hydromechanical tools such as grapples. Véronique Kennerson, Product Specialist for Excavators at Mecalac, explains: “Fully integrated into the machine, our Tiltrotators further enhance the versatility and productivity of Mecalac excavators. Thanks to their sandwich mounting between two CONNECT quick couplers, the operator can easily remove either the tool or the entire tool-tiltrotator system to immediately resume work with a 4x1 or loader bucket, for example. “Another great advantage is that the Mecalac Tiltrotator, while extremely robust and powerful, is also one of the lightest on the market.”

Maximizing the 360° capabilities of Mecalac excavators The unrivalled stability of Mecalac excavators makes them ideal for tiltrotators. Mecalac’s patented kinematics, in particular, come into their own. The boom, which is positioned far back, is perfect when

weight is added to the end of the stick, as it acts as a counterweight. As for the two-piece boom with offset kinematics, they will allow you to position your tools ideally when used with the Tiltrotator. The offset at the top of the boom (standard), combined with the Tiltrotator, fur ther increases the 360° capabilities of Mecalac excavators. Operators are able to dig deeper trenches than ever before, in parallel with the machine. The combination of offset and Tiltrotator offers almost infinite possibilities. It means more accurate results, faster work, less repositioning of the machine and greater safety on the job site.

The Mecalac MR50 and MR60 Tiltrotator Option

Available with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, Mecalac Tiltrotators are already available for the 11MWR and 9MWR wheeled excavators. Over the coming months, they will gradually be introduced for the 8MCR and 10MCR crawler skid excavators, followed by the 15MWR wheeled excavator, the 15MC crawler excavator and finally the 12MTX wheeled excavator loader. T h e T il t rot a to r o p t io n ha s been designed for seamless integration into these machines while maintaining performance. The proven flexibility of Mecalac excavators is further enhanced by adding a Tiltrotator, creating limitless possibilities.

The Mecalac MR50 and MR60 Tiltrotator Option includes dedicated multi-function joysticks, various Tiltrotator conf igurations and settings as well as “Home” (return to operator preset position) and “Bucket Shake” functions. To further meet the needs of operators, Mecalac Tiltrotators are available with or without a grap module. Acting as a grapple, this allows objects to be grabbed and moved while keeping the tool mounted on the Tiltrotator.

Wieland makes a quick connection at Project Hana Wieland Electric has supplied its popular Metalynx2 modular wiring system and a variety of the company’s GST products for Project Hana, a two floor CAT B fit out commercial property at St Martin’s Court in the City of London in a prime location next to St Pauls Cathedral. The Wieland products were specified and installed by Phoenix ME Ltd with the Metalynx2 system used to feed the lighting control modules and fan coil units throughout the building whilst the GST system was used in all prefabricated modular areas to provide a connection for linear light fittings.

H

ana, a subsidiary of CBRE Group, offers a full range of flexible working solutions and St Martin’s Court is the company’s third facility, comprising over 100,000 sq ft of private offices, on-demand meeting rooms and sophisticated co-working spaces that are available by the hour, day, or week. The Hana facility will initially be fully occupied by approximately 500 CBRE employees who will operate from the space while the company’s existing UK headquarters at Henrietta House in the West End is undergoing redevelopment work. Hana at St Martin’s Court’s amenity-rich, premium shared space will become available to other occupants in early 2021. Thanks to its innovative design, Metalynx2 uses a minimum number of components, all of which lock together for secure installation and in full compliance with all relevant standards, representing a smarter generation of structured wiring that delivers even greater savings on costs and installation time. It is ideal for power distribution, lighting control (including DALI and KNX) and fan coil units and, with the ability to customise Metalynx2 components for special projects, it offers infinite design flexibility.

26

As Project Hana was a fast pace refurbishment, it was paramount that all systems and components would arrive on site in the agreed timescale. Wieland designed, plotted and fabricated all

requirements off site which when delivered, allowed for easy installation by Phoenix to ensure connection simply from the home run being installed back to the distribution board and the final runs to the lighting control modules and fan coil units. As all connections and end runs have a plug and play based system, this also allowed for second fix connections to be completed quickly and effortlessly. Metalynx2 provides any scheme with complete flexibility so should

a design need to be changed at time of fitting or in the future, the system can be modified quickly with minimum downtime. With Wieland’s prompt delivery service this also assisted other contractors working on Project Hana as this ensured no time was wasted waiting for product on-site and allowed for final connection in line with the programme of works. Wieland also provided on-site project management and technical support. www.wieland.co.uk

Waterloo Air Products Case Study

October 2021

Royal College of Physicians at The Spine, Liverpool The stunning £35m building The Spine in Liverpool’s dynamic Knowledge Quarter (KQ Liverpool) has opened as one of the world’s healthiest buildings, using Waterloo’s industry-leading air distribution products. Seven floors of this highly distinctive purpose-built office building, which has been designed by AHR to meet the international WELL Building Standard, will become the new northern home of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The Spine is the gateway to KQ Liverpool’s Paddington Village site, a vibrant new health, technology and science community developed by Liverpool City Council that has brought together many influential organisations and revitalised this corner of the city centre. Moving into The Spine marks the start of an exciting new chapter in the RCP’s 500-year history by establishing two beacons of excellence for the first time, one in London and one in Liverpool. This presents the RCP with exceptional opportunities to strengthen its standing as a world-class learning and assessment centre and to lead the improvement of patient care throughout the country. With the goal of achieving the prestigious WELL Building Standard in mind, the concept and design of the air distribution system for the new building needed to meet the highest possible specification. Working with consulting engineers BDP throughout RIBA Design Stages 2 & 3, Waterloo’s North West Technical Sales Manager Tony Sherlock successfully helped to establish optimum air distribution solutions that were commensurate with this challenging architectural design. A number of Waterloo’s innovative product options which would suit a wide array of feature ceiling types were considered. Through workshop sessions

with the design team, the high-quality CS-F Linear Slot Diffuser was collectively agreed upon as a consistent visual approach for most of the building. A key advantage of the CS-F is that it could be carefully adapted to suit the various feature ceiling types and the plank tile ceiling systems designed for the new building by SAS International. Other Waterloo products included in the air distribution design plans were Swirl Diffusers and Airline Linear Grilles, all of which were carefully selected and finished to suit the high-quality interior design throughout the building. As part of the comprehensive collaboration that Waterloo offers to its partners, Tony Sherlock produced detailed technical schedules for all of the air terminal devices and plenum boxes for inclusion in the tender package to the project’s prospective MEP contractor. Waterloo and BDP’s expert input helped to secure the contract and in November 2020 work began on-site on the mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation. Waterloo has continued to work closely with the contractor team to refine product selections, maintain accurate air terminal schedules, deliver best value and ensure adherence to the BDP design intent. “One of the most important aspects of any successful project is reliable partnerships,” said Waterloo’s Tony Sherlock. “At Waterloo we always strive to deliver complete personal continuity throughout the project, from concept to handover. With the WELL Building Standard as a goal, we were fully confident that our air distribution system would be of the standard required to achieve this objective.” Designed by AHR, with regional director Robert Hopkins as the lead, The Spine takes its name from a distinctive staircase visible from the outside which is similar in form to vertebrae, and the façade is made up of 23 million individual polygons that represent human skin. With the highest outlook of any building in Liverpool, The Spine commands stunning views across the city and beyond to Snowdonia, the Peak District, the Pennines and along the Lancashire coast. www.waterloo.co.uk

Experts predict emotion detection speakers and energy providers that pay you, in the home 2050 • • •

Smart toilets that monitor for signs of illness and emotion detection speakers to boost moods will be the norm by 2050 An energy on-demand type offering will allow customers to choose between hydrogen, solar or wind power via an app Experts predicted how smart home technology will impact our energy bills.

Over the next thirty years, our homes will become greener and smarter with Brits expected to splash out on gadgets like holographic TVs and smart windows by 2050, according to the experts at energyhelpline.com. Smart toilets that monitor for signs of illness, speaker systems with emotion detection technology, and fridges that recommend meals based on dietary requirements or available ingredients will all be the norm.

As the internet of things changes the way our electronic devices interact with each other, experts at the switching service predict our

energy bills will also adapt to give us a greater understanding of how we use our electricity. Each item will collect data on its individual energy usage and be sent to the bill payer at the end of every month. With greater transparency over energy usage, households will be able to make more informed decisions about how to reduce energy consumption and save on their bills. An energy on-demand type of communication will also allow consumers to select the energy source used to power their homes, meaning households will be able to

change their energy mix with just a couple of taps on an app. With a choice of hydrogen, wind, solar, or nuclear, homeowners could have the option to switch between a combination of sources depending on the season, for instance opting for solar power during the summer months when supply is at its highest and, in theory, cheapest. As we move towards a future of greater control, energy experts at energyhelpline.com have predicted how this smart home technology will impact our energy bills, including how much the average Brit can expect to

October 2021 Industry News

pay on their home technology items in 2050. An electric vehicle will be a staple in the garage of the future and based on today’s Tesla Model 3 will cost the average owner £369.20 per year in electricity. With the average UK driver currently spending £1,041.81 on petrol per year, car owners in 2050 will make a significant saving. More extreme weather in the UK due to climate change will also make a smart air conditioning unit an essential item in the British home by 2050, with experts calculating an expected average cost of £76.64 per year in electricity. Yet, with smart energy storing devices that find the cheapest time to source electricity then store it for future use, households of the future could even open their energy bill to find that they’ve made money by selling electricity back to the grid. Tashema Jackson, energy expert at energyhelpline.com, comments: “Change can be exciting but nervewracking. The move away from traditional energy sources such as gas may leave many worried about the impact on their wallets.

“The power to choose your energy source on-demand will not only provide greater control but also help reduce costs by spreading the supply across multiple sources; it’s a move that will not only benefit households financially but is better for the planet. “But you don’t have to wait for the future to take control. With the recent

price cap news, those currently on a standard variable tariff can expect to see their bills increase by £139. But locking in a long-term fixed deal today – especially one that is green – will protect you from sudden price increases, as well as reducing your carbon footprint.”

MEDITE SMARTPLY plays key role in zero carbon house at COP26

MEDITE SMARTPLY will play a crucial role in the construction of the COP26 House, a zero carbon, timber frame building built by Beyond Zero Homes. The project will showcase low carbon, circular solutions in building and living during the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow this October. Chris King, Managing Director at MEDITE SMARTPLY said: “We are delighted to be part of this project that will help demonstrate the boundless opportunities for sustainable timber based solutions in construction. Actions speak louder than words, and this building encapsulates MEDITE SMARTPLY’s commitment to building a more sustainable future. “The products and systems for fighting the climate emergency are already available. We in the construction industry have not only the opportunity but the responsibility to put theories into action and show the world how we can build and live sustainably, using timber and ecologically responsible solutions.” The members of Beyond Zero Homes are united by a common goal that goes beyond zero carbon: to demonstrate how beautiful, affordable, healthy homes can be developed with minimal impact on the environment, throughout their lifecycle.

44

The one-bedroom house will be built on a 10m x 5m footprint. It has been specifically designed to use homegrown C16 Spruce to avoid the need for

imported timber, and the construction is based on a 1.2m grid to be easily panelised and prefabricated. These elements lend themselves perfectly to the specification of SMARTPLY OSB, sustainably produced in Ireland and already stored across the UK. As part of the Coillte Group, the company prides itself on its sustainable supply chain and manufacturing processes, meaning the company’s products are as environmentally conscious in their make up as they are in their application. MEDITE SMARTPLY has pioneered the sustainable timber industry in Europe, with all specialised timber panels—MEDITE Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and SMARTPLY Oriented Strand Board (OSB). Developers Receive Green Light for £150M First Phase at Sheffield’s West Bar Scheme Full planning approval was granted today for delivery of the first significant phase of the much-anticipated new West Bar mixed use development.

T

he positive decision means that construction of this important scheme can start within the next few months, on completion of the ongoing demolition. The reserved matters approval kickstarts regeneration of the seven-acre disused site to provide much needed new Grade A office accommodation (incorporating ancillary retail / leisure uses), residential apartments, and highquality public realm. Scheme developer, Urbo (West Bar) Ltd, a joint venture between Urbo Regeneration and Peveril Securities (the development arm of the Bowmer and Kirkland Group) has already secured the £150 million funding to deliver the first phase from Legal & General in the largest single private sector investment deal Sheffield has ever seen. Ultimately the partnership plans to deliver a £300 million mixed use destination that is expected to create around 6,000 – 8,000 new jobs as well as supporting Sheffield’s major housing needs.

46

Phase one includes the development of No.1 West Bar Square, a new 100,000 sq ft office building with ground floor retail and leisure space. It delivers against much needed Grade A employment space, with floor plates suitable for large scale occupiers. It will also deliver Soho Yard comprising 368 Build to Rent residential apartments. On completion of the project as a whole, West Bar will provide approximately one acre of public realm and green space extending

the Council’s hugely successful grey to green and SUDS transformation. The first phase at West Bar will also provide nearly 300 cycle storage spaces and connectivity into the surrounding walking and cycling routes as part of a push for multimodal travel. Designed by award winning architects 5plus with planning advice from Asteer Planning, No.1 West Bar Square will be an impressive and sustainable gateway building to the wider West Bar regeneration project. Accessible from Corporation Street, a contemporary curved exterior design to the building will create an inviting entrance to adjacent public realm and the development beyond. Rising eight storeys with retail accommodation at ground floor, the upper levels will provide highly efficient floorplates up to 14,000 sq ft and a roof terrace offering panoramic views across the city. Urbo will also create West Bar Square, the landscaped focal point of the project, which will provide much needed amenity space to the occupiers of West Bar scheme and the adjacent Riverside Business Park. Soho Yard offers 368 residential apartments within two buildings situated around a landscaped space and gardens with access via Plum Lane. The properties will be delivered and operated by Legal & General as part of its highly successful ‘Build to Rent – Homes for Life’ portfolio. It sits on the site of the famous ‘Soho wheel’ that powered grinding machinery near the River Don after the Industrial Revolution.

Legal & General is using its varied long-term sources of capital to support a UK wide job creation agenda, reshaping the urban landscape, and providing the significant investment needed to help cities adapt, change and innovate. It is committed to investing in Sheffield and to supporting its post-crisis growth ambitions, where it recognises the high potential that the city has to offer. As part of the redevelopment, car parking overall at West Bar will be reduced from current numbers to promote sustainable travel and reduce traffic whilst also providing new electric charging points alongside low emission vehicle spaces. A separate planning application for a new, 450 space multi-storey car park which will also form part of Phase One and will be submitted shortly. Phase two plans for West Bar include a second Legal & Generalfunded, 100,000 sq. ft. office building, , with further phases ultimately providing 1 million sq ft of mixed-use accommodation, of which over 500,000 sq ft will be Grade A office space offering the largest floor plates in Sheffield city centre. West Bar enjoys a prominent position on the Inner Ring Road between the booming Kelham Island district and Sheffield’s Cathedral and Castlegate Quarters. It has already received outline planning consent and the current ‘reserved matters’ application is fully in line with previously agreed parameters and planning conditions.

The Copper Sustainability Partnership:

Creating a Better Future, Pipe by Pipe Over the last couple of decades, plastic has become increasingly prevalent in the built environment. Looking back to the 1990’s and earlier, copper plumbing fixtures would have been the norm in all new buildings but now, nearly all new buildings use plastic pipes both in underfloor and plumbing applications.

W

e all know that the planet is experiencing a climate emergency and the overuse of plastics is a huge contributing factor. Since its invention over 60 years ago, plastic use has grown exponentially – in all industries, not just in construction and plumbing – and has resulted in the creation of more than 8.3 billion metric tonnes of various plastics. As a result, according to the Resource Efficiency Collective, in the region of eight million tonnes of plastic waste enters the ocean every year – more than twice the annual consumption of plastics in the UK. To protect our planet without hindering technological advancement or compromising the lives of future generations, it is critical that we use materials which can meet our needs without depleting our natural resources or causing damage to our environment. And this is where copper comes in. Copper is an extremely favourable material – it has exceptional durability and resistance to corrosion, it is one of the most versatile materials on the planet, and it is infinitely recyclable so can be re-used repeatedly without losing its properties. The Copper Sustainability Partnership (CuSP) is to this end, on a mission to fight back against the plastics greenwash and support the industry to use copper as the driving force for a better future.

What is CuSP? CuSP was created by two competing copper tube manufacturers, Lawton Tubes and Mueller Europe, who have joined forces to promote the benefits of copper and fight back against the plastics greenwash.

52

Our aim is to challenge norms and break the mould to achieve greater environmental thinking, insight

sharing, and collaboration within the plumbing and construction industries. Working alongside organisations such as the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products, we are taking a stand against the inaccuracies of the plastics greenwash, to improve the quality of materials used in the built environment.

– most plastics are still not being recycled. Many plastic manufacturers pledge their commitments to developing a catalogue of 100% recyclable products where the raw materials can be used and re-used without the loss of quality or use of finite fossil fuels, however, forgive the pun but this remains a ‘pipe dream’.

It’s critical that, as an industry, we use materials which can meet our needs without depleting our natural resources or causing damage to our environment and health – and copper provides the perfect solution.

The plastic compounds used for pipe are created with hydrophobic properties also known as PBT (persistent, bio-accumulative toxic) materials, which are particularly troublesome when they enter the environment. If given the right conditions, plastic chemicals can leach into water or substances they come into contact with, which could prove harmful to humans or other organisms.

The plastics greenwash The transition from copper to plastic in the plumbing industry and the built environment is mostly down to the plastics industry focusing on the benefits, while downplaying the environmental impact and greatly exaggerating its recyclability. Despite industry bodies’ suggestions that plastic pipes are fully recyclable and have a circular, end of life economy, one important fact remains

Research suggests that cutting plastic consumption by half while making the remainder from non-fossil fuel compounds will make it possible to cut global emissions from plastics from 1,984 Mt CO2e in 2015 to 790 Mt CO2e in 2050. It is no small feat to reduce our current plastic consumption

October 2021 by half, but a key component of making this possible is to replace and substitute materials used across key manufacturing sectors, which combined account for more than 60% of plastics emissions.

The sustainable solution As a material and an industry, copper is working hard to protect the environment in which it came from. According to the International Copper Association, about two thirds of copper produced since 1900 is still in use today, with more than 30% of demand met solely by recycled sources. Additionally, the US Geological Survey recently conducted research into the world’s copper resources and discovered there are approximately 5.6 billion metric tonnes available to use, a figure more than sufficient to surpass both current and future demand. Trades such as construction and plumbing have a history of having a strong circular economy when it comes to the use and re-use of copper pipes. The metal from old or redundant pipework is recovered before being melted and cast into new products, ready for installation to start the cycle once again. Because of copper’s unique ability to be recycled over and over without any loss in performance or properties,

around half of Europe’s copper demand is currently being met by recycled materials and approximately 30% of demand globally, drastically reducing the need for mining. What’s more, as recycling techniques improve, this figure will continue to increase and the need to mine will continue to decline.

Looking to the future To create a future that isn’t reliant on finite resources, we need to look at materials which can offer far more for the environment and the people it serves, without limiting the progress of innovation. Unlike alternatives, copper has natural anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties, which supports the maintenance of healthy drinking water and is frequently used in hospitals because of its natural ability to protect the health of patients. As far as plumbing is concerned, copper is the pro-plumber’s material of choice. It is an all-natural material that doesn’t leach toxic substances and it provides incredible thermal resilience, making it the only material able to withstand thermal shocking at 70 degrees Celsius. It is also a material that’s able to keep its integrity for hundreds of thousands of years. For example, copper makes up part of Sweden’s nuclear waste handling

technology where copper canisters encapsulate the radioactive waste for long-term storage. The canisters are required to keep their integrity for at least 100,000 years but are thought to last five times longer. With use in industrial products required to keep their reliability for hundreds of thousands of years, it’s clear copper can meet the requirements of a future where people need to get more value from less and use more ethically and sustainably sourced resources. Returning to copper will ultimately support the industry make our homes and way of living more environmentally friendly.

It’s a company with great vision and we want to be a part of it.” Strong outdoor signs help you captivate potential customers’ attention as they travel down the street.
