Surface Design Show 2016 takes place at London’s Business Design Centre from 9-11th February and is the only event in the UK that focuses solely on interior and exterior surfaces. The 2016 Show will be the largest and most exciting to date connecting innovative materials with a specifying audience of architects, designers and specifiers. Not only will there be thousands of surfaces to discover, but also over forty presentations on three different stages to educate and inspire.
The three seminar areas are the Main Stage, the CPD Hub and the School Room. The Main Stage is the home of headline acts with topics that appeal right across the design world. Associations presenting on the Main Stage will include Houzz, New London Architecture, SBID Healthcare Advisory Council and BIID. The CPD Hub sponsored by BCFA and BIID is a forum for professional development where visitors can gain CPD points by attending. The School Room, which is part of the Light School, provides information about lighting design and trends and is sponsored by iGuzzini with mondo arc as the media partner.
The Main Stage
The Preview Evening sponsored by Pintark by Loco Design (stand 414) kicks off Surface Design Show on Tuesday 9 February from 6pm. Taking place on the Main Stage will be the Live debate hosted by New London Architecture with this year’s topic ‘Architecture is more than skin deep’.’ The debate will be chaired by New London Architecture’s Peter Murray, with other speakers including Brett Steele from AA School, Clare Wright from Wright & Wright and Roz Barr from Roz Barr Architects.
The ever popular PechaKucha Evening, will be hosted by Annalie Riches, Director at Mikhail Riches on Wednesday 10 February at 6pm. PechaKucha is an exciting and inspiring presentation format where architects and interior designers show and speak about 20 images, each for 20 seconds. Attendees will be inspired by speakers including Dinah Bornat from ZCD Architects, Joe Morris from Duggan Morris Architects and Katy Marks from Citizens Design Bureau.
The long awaited Surface Design Awards winners will be announced on Thursday 11 February at 1pm. The Keynote Address will be given by Ab Rogers, Creative Director of Ab Rogers Design. The Awards Presentation will be chaired by Annabelle Filer, Founder of SCIN. The Surface Design Awards recognise examples of progressive design and the use of innovative surfaces in projects both in the UK and internationally. The Surface Design Awards have adopted Maggie’s as the Charity Partner for 2016, helping to raise funds for the new Maggie’s Centre in Leeds designed by Heatherwick Studio.
CPD Hub
Located on the mezzanine the CPD Hub is a forum for learning and professional development. There will be more than a dozen varied sessions over the entire 2 ½ days covering all aspects of the surfaces sector. Seminars will include ‘Smart Specification’ hosted by FIS, ‘Upcycling Natural Materials for Cladding’ by Vutox and ‘Breathing Life into Cities’ by Scotscape.
School Room
Located in Light School, the School Room will provide architects and designers with education and knowledge about lighting design and lighting products. Many of the School Room lecturers will be returning for their second or third year and will also be joined by new colleagues. The plethora of lighting experts at the show will include David Atkinson from David Atkinson Lighting Design who will present ‘Diversity through Light’, Sally Storey from Lighting Design International – ‘How to use Light to Create a Retail Experience that re-inforces your Brand’ whilst ‘The Language of Light: a Creative Approach to Residential Lighting’ will be presented by Rebecca Weir of Light IQ.
Future Thinking is Surface Design Show’s annual look at surface trends for 2017, new for 2016 will be Surface Spotlight Live curated by Sally Angharad. The two sector spotlights will be Health + Wellbeing (media partner Healthcare Design & Management Magazine) and Retail Design (sponsored by Concord) and is a tactile display featuring materials that make a significant contribution to both. Sally Angharad will present a talk on the Main Stage looking at the material and texture directions for both sectors whilst other relevant talks will include ‘Future Shop: Can materials make the retail experience?’ presented by Mark Faithfull and ‘Design Innovation in Healthcare’ from the Don Mcintyre Institute of Design Innovation.
