Initiative aims to keep young talent in the British construction industry
Fit out and finishing specialist Lucas has launched The Lucas College Programme in Partnership with Dulux Trade, Go Construct, Knauf and Constructing Excellence (Kent). Aimed at talented students completing their NVQ Level 3 studies in painting and decorating, The Lucas College Programme, with circulated invitations to entry to all UK colleges, is designed to help counter the widely criticised skills shortage in the construction industry.
The programme adopts a competition approach and will be open to any student, but is particularly aimed at those who do not have a sponsor, work placement or employer and who are in danger of leaving the industry.
The competition is based on a comprehensive scorecard that not only rates students’ painting abilities but a whole range of other skills and attributes such as their safety record, work ethic, ability to absorb project specifications, customer relations and their overall attitude to taking responsibility and project delivery. With shortlisted finalists going to the Dulux Training Academy in Slough for review, coupled with the chance to experience new product innovation and application with Knauf’s new spray plaster finish.
The Lucas College Programme will be launched in colleges from 4th April 2016 with a “MAD” poster campaign emphasising Motivation, Attitude and Desire.
The successful entrants who progress completely through the programme will win a full VIP experience in visiting the McLaren Technology Group, the sports car manufacturer and F1 team and a technology partner of Lucas. In addition they will be awarded a specially designed trophy and a framed certificate as well as being afforded the opportunity to work with Lucas on its signature projects.
Danny Lucas, Executive Chairman and Managing Director of Lucas said: “So many complain about how few young people are coming through to the industry but I hope we have come up with a practical solution. I started in construction aged 15 and had a “don’t give up” attitude throughout my earlier years. I’d like to enthuse new industry recruits with the same.”
Paul Chandler, Head of Marketing at Knauf adds “We are delighted to be involved with this initiative, encouraging new entrants to the sector and helping to equip them with an understanding of the latest products and techniques on the market. We hope that this programme will grow over the three years and involve an increasing number of the most promising young tradespeople.”
“This partnership supports our ambition to professionalise decorating and encourage a new generation to build successful careers within the industry. Our involvement in this initiative will see Dulux Academy support applicants in the development of knowledge, skills and confidence”
Vickie Mather, Dulux Academy Manager
