Helping a project to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, and providing a harmonious and calming environment for care home residents has seen Marley Eternit’s JB Shingles win the Sustainable Roofs (Shingles and Shakes) category in the UK Roofing Awards 2016.
The winning project was an annex on London Care Partnership’s (LCP) Alexandra Gardens Care Home in Hounslow. The newest part of the centre was constructed to create six single-storey apartments with the roof installed by Endeavour Roofing Contractors Ltd. Although it adjoins the main building, it is set in its own small woodland enclave surrounded by trees.
LCP needed to design an apartment block to the high standard of specification required to fully support the needs of its residents – young people up to 35 years old who receive specialist residential support to help them on a journey to greater independence and in preparation for the transition to supported living. It needed to create a harmonious and calming environment to help the young adults living there feel safe and comfortable. The building had to blend in beautifully with its environment, which was a key reason why JB Western Red Cedar Shingles were specified.
Cliff Hamilton from LCP has specified JB Shingles on a number of projects – both for the company and on other building projects – and plans to use it in the future. He said: “I would choose shingles every time because you cannot beat natural products for both their beauty and performance in transforming a development and creating something that sits very well in its environment.
“The whole experience of Alexandra Gardens is critical to supporting the residents in making a transition to a more independent life, and the shingles play a huge role in creating a calming and harmonious natural environment.”
JB Shingles also had two other projects shortlisted in the Shingles & Shakes category; Culzean Castle Country Park Cottages in Maybole working with contractor DM Roofing & Roughcasting and Pilgrims’ Cross C of E Aided Primary School in Andover working with contractor Avonside Roofing.
Western Red Cedar Shingles from the UK’s leading roofing systems manufacturer, Marley Eternit, are one of the few products outside of Canada and the USA to achieve the much-coveted membership of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau (CSSB) in terms of sustainability and are graded Blue Label (highest quality). JB Shingles also have one of the lowest carbon footprints of any widely used building product because they are so light for transport, demonstrate properties such as high thermal performance to weather beautifully over a number of years.
