LK2 ARCHITECTS Ltd and LK2 Sport & Leisure Ltd have completed work on a new £2m state-of-the-art football facility in Shepherds Bush, nearby to the previous BBC Television Centre headquarters.
The 11,800 sqm Hammersmith Park Football Centre has been developed to provide much needed sports facilities in the area, replacing an outdated facility. LK2’s sport and leisure team worked alongside its architects to deliver the scheme.
PlayFootball won the contract during a two day tender process and was awarded the work to deliver the facility and provide long term management operation of the site. LK2 acted as the lead consultant, supporting and advising PlayFootball throughout the process, it supported the organisation in the development of creating sustainable links to the local community.
The new centre now boasts 10 3G five-a-side football pitches with the potential to incorporate additional pitches, and a community focussed pavilion. The single story pavilion includes a café / bar, a community space, toilets and changing rooms, plus a large number of cycle racks.
London and Lincoln based LK2 utilised its extensive sport development and design expertise to investigate the area, taking a close look at how the redevelopment could deliver a future-proof facility the community would be proud of.
Andy Newman, associate at LK2, said: “The Hammersmith Park and Football Centre is an incredible new amenity that provides quality fit for purpose sports facilities.
“When designing the scheme, the key to our strategy was to enhance the quality and accessibility of sport. We worked hard to understand the area and the need of the community and our design was developed to provide local people with a centre that allowed them to experience the positive benefits associated with participating in sport.
“The design and the layout of the scheme strongly supports the community objectives of PlayFootball – to encourage increased engagement with sport in the local area, and we are really pleased to have been a part of something that will enrich the local community for years to come. We are delighted PlayFootball has now become the preferred partner for the local authority too, creating a strong working relationship.”
LK2 has also recently completed a full architectural service of St Helena School in Colchester – another PlayFootball facility worth £1.5m.
PlayFootball provide Football Association accredited, small-sided, floodlit football venues for hire. Steve Bennett at PlayFootball, said of the new facility: “Through the partnership with Hammersmith and Fulham Council, PlayFootball has provided a high quality all weather football facility to benefit the local community. Also key to delivering this fantastic facility were LK2 Architects, which ensured this project continued to move along swiftly with their efficiency, expertise and knowledge.”
The new centre which is free for local people to use, opened to the public in February.
