Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has been awarded the contract to supply Oriam, the new Sports Performance Centre at Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus.
The £33m multi-sport centre will provide Scotland’s top athletes with state-of-the-art facilities to enable them to compete at an international level. It will also be open to the wider public and is hoped it will inspire future sporting generations.
1,200m2 of Charcon’s Andover Washed block paving in Anthracite Charcoal has been specified for the external hard landscaping, and will be used to create a contemporary backdrop for the scheme.
Offering consistency in colour and texture, Andover Washed allows different patterning effects in adjacent areas to be created. It contains up to 50% recycled materials in the complete mix design for a more sustainable option.
Mike Davies, Specifications and Major Projects Manager for Charcon, comments: “With a £33m investment in a state-of-the-art sporting facility, the external landscaping is an essential component to ensure the overall vision for the project is realised and that it adds to the aesthetic appeal of the building. Our Andover Washed Block Paving is the ideal choice: it has been used on a number of prestigious schemes thanks to its strong credentials, offering a durable and sustainable solution without compromising on design.”
The Minister for Sport, Jamie Hepburn MSP, performed the ground breaking ceremony in March and construction is scheduled for completion this summer.
When complete, Oriam will include a full-sized indoor pitch with seating for 500, top-level grass and synthetic outdoor pitches, a high performance strength and conditioning centre, a medical centre and hydrotherapy pool, fitness centres, studios and support services.
