SINGLE APPROACH GETS NEW STATION COVERED @ProtanUK

The new £41million Edinburgh Gateway Interchange station is bringing new opportunities and connections for train travel throughout the region as part of the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme.

Delivered by Balfour Beatty & Lakesmere for Network Rail Scotland, much of the roofing of the new facility- part of a £742million railway network improvement scheme for the region- comprises single ply membrane, from Protan, specified by IDP Architects LLP.

In total, approximately 900m2 of dark grey Protan SE1.6mm single ply, mechanically fixed, forms the five roofs over the platform circulation areas, pedestrian footbridge, plant room, transformer room and station building that connects the platforms to the adjacent tram stop. The roofs over the platform circulation areas further incorporate Protan Progrip R walkway system, to provide enhanced grip for maintenance workers, and Omega profiles for aesthetic interest.

Observed Andy Nelson, Protan’s Northern regional manager, “We have an established relationship with IDP Architects LLP, having worked with the practice on previous Network Rail projects such as the award-winning Haymarket Station upgrade, also using Protan SE and ProGrip. WE also have an established partnership with Lakesmere, so worked together throughout the project to ensure the single ply membrane works proceeded smoothly.”

Designed to cope with extreme weather conditions without detriment, Protan SE membrane is independently tested and certified to provide durability and weather protection without degradation for up to 30 years. In addition, air leakage is controlled in line with the latest Building Regulations.

The 14mm thick Protan Progrip R is designed for heavy foot traffic, and is completely impervious to all weathers; cross-directional top ribs and a ‘diamond cut’ top surface deliver the high slip resistance required for potentially risky locations.

Protan’s comprehensive range of single ply roofing solutions, produced at the company’s Norway manufacturing plant, are all designed to protect value for specifier and contractor.
