New Off-slip Opens at J24 of M1
Winvic’s Major Highways Upgrades at East Midlands Gateway Near Completion
22 Aug 2018 — Winvic Construction Ltd, the main multidisciplinary contractor that is undertaking the major upgrade works to junctions 24 and 24a of the M1, has reached a project milestone with the opening of the new off-slip at J24 and the direct connection from the A50 eastbound to the M1 southbound. The works are part of SEGRO’s Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) – SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (EMG) – a ground-breaking, multi modal ‘inland port’.
The changes to the road network are helping to facilitate a Rail Freight Interchange with Terminal, 11 modern industrial units, container storage and HGV park; Winvic is constructing all current elements and has also been appointed to build the four industrial units which are already under contract.
Further to the improvements made to the M1 motorway, a new junction has been created on the A453. It will provide access to SEGRO Logistics Park as well as connect the new Kegworth Bypass, which will reduce traffic flowing through the village. The new road infrastructure will also provide better access to Lockington via the local roads.
Working in partnership with Highways England, who are also upgrading the M1 to a smart motorway between junctions 23a and 25, Winvic has kept disruption to road users to a minimum. The EMG highways works that are being undertaken by Winvic will be fully complete as scheduled below:
• M1 users – Completed 31 July 2018;
• A50 users – Completed 31 July 2018;
• Local Lockington traffic – Complete 29 October 2018.
Winvic’s Project Manager, Mark Skelton, commented: “Winvic exceeds people’s expectations whenever possible, from clients, agencies and authorities to local residents and those who might only use a new road just once. The 700 acre EMG scheme is a challenge but Winvic’s ‘one-team’ ethos and its vast experience delivering infrastructure projects has enabled us to adhere to the programme and find creative-solutions. We’re happy to have delivered on time for the all the people who will benefit from the new highways layouts and junctions, and be one step closer to realising this economically beneficial ‘inland port’ for the UK.”
Kate Bedson, Development Director, at Roxhill, said: “Progress at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway is continuing a pace. We have already contracted over 2 million square foot of light industrial property to household names, bringing employment and inward investment to the region. There have been significant improvements made to the surrounding roads, with the new slip road from J24 off the M1 now open bringing better access to the 700 acre site. The power needed to enable the huge development has also been connected which will further attract new business.”
